General Anatomy The human body consists of six major segments. Each of these segments has its own specific role, function, and structure. Each of the six segments has a distinct biomechanical profile. In addition, there are many other specific features which define the anatomy and function of each segment, and may include structural features such as joint-like structures, muscle groups, skin, tendons, ligaments, and bones. These features are referred to collectively as the skeleton. The shape of the skeletal system and its relationship to other parts of the body, as well as the functions and structure of each segment, all relate to the biomechanical characteristics of each segment. For example, muscles attach to bones, tendons connect muscles to bones, and ligaments connect bones to other bones.
