Mickey S. Urdea, Co-Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Urdea was one of the first employees at Chiron where he directed the nucleic acids chemistry group and began the molecular diagnostics efforts. He led the development of quantitative RNA and DNA assays, including the introduction of the first HIV and HCV viral load tests. He became head of the Nucleic Acid Diagnostics business unit at Chiron. In 1998, he joined Bayer Diagnostics as Senior Vice President of Nucleic Acid Diagnostics and acting-Chief Scientific Officer of Bayer Diagnostics. He left Bayer in 2000 and co-founded Tethys Bioscience in 2002. Dr. Urdea received a Ph.D. in biochemistry at Washington State University and held an NIH postdoctoral fellowship at UCSF with William J. Rutter. He has published more than 185 articles and book chapters, and is an inventor on more than 100 issued and pending patents.

R. Michael Richey, President
After completing a B.S. in Laboratory Technology at the University of Oklahoma, Mike Richey worked as a clinical microbiologist in a university hospital lab. He joined Abbott Laboratories, initially working in Research and Development for the Diagnostics Division and over the next 12 years served in project management, and sales and marketing management roles. Joining Chiron in 1990, he served as Vice President for the Diagnostics Division with responsibility for worldwide sales, marketing and market development for the company's novel HCV and HIV viral load tests. Many elements of the business model employed by Tethys Bioscience today were pioneered by Mike during his tenure at Chiron. Prior to joining Tethys Bioscience, he built a consulting practice focused on portfolio strategy and value creation for numerous biotech and diagnostic companies.

Michael P. McKenna, Chief Scientific Officer
Dr. McKenna has made a career of managing advanced technology development and scaling technologies focused on product development. In his positions as Vice President of Operations and Collaborative Research at CuraGen Corporation, he led the development and industrialization of more than 15 processes spanning genomics, sequencing, and proteomics. This work yielded breakthrough publications in whole genome protein interaction maps, whole genome sequencing technologies, and, in collaboration with Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the first generation of in vitro predictive toxicology assays. Dr. McKenna received his B.S. from Carnegie-Mellon University and his Ph.D. from Yale University.

Steven M. Watkins, Chief Technology Officer
Steve Watkins received his Ph.D. in Food Science from UC Davis studying the effects of dietary lipids on mitochondrial energetics and lipid metabolism. After completing his Ph.D. he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at UC Davis and the Nestle Research Center in Lausanne Switzerland. In May of 2000 Steve co-founded Lipomics and co-developed the technology underpinning the Company's research and service capabilities. He has published many articles and chapters in peer-reviewed journals, is frequently sought as an invited speaker at conferences worldwide, and is a founding board member of the Metabolomics Society.

Mohan S. Iyer, Chief Business Officer
Mohan Iyer brings to Tethys a wealth of experience, including corporate and business development, strategic planning, product development, engineering, manufacturing, and marketing. He joined Tethys from Burrill & Company, where he was Managing Director of the merchant banking group — chiefly advising emerging and public biotech companies about partnering and mergers-and-acquisitions transactions. As a member of the executive team at diaDexus, Inc. he played a key role in the commercialization of a novel diagnostic product for cardiovascular risk assessment. Prior to that, he was a healthcare consultant at The Wilkerson Group in New York and San Francisco, assisting various biotech, diagnostic and medical technology companies with their market-based strategies. Mohan began his biotech career as a biochemical process engineer at Genentech, where he spent seven years in large-scale GMP manufacturing of recombinant protein products. He holds an MS in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University and an MBA from Yale University.

Matthew B. Ferguson, Chief Financial Officer
Matt Ferguson brings to Tethys a successful track record in the financial management of growth-stage life sciences and technology businesses. Prior to joining Tethys, he was the Chief Financial Officer of Proteolix, a developer of novel drugs for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases. Proteolix was acquired in 2009 by Onyx Pharmaceuticals. Before Proteolix, Matt served as Chief Financial Officer at FoxHollow Technologies, where he was responsible for the company's 2004 initial public offering and played a significant role in the company's 2007 merger with ev3 Inc. Earlier in his career, he held a variety of financial, corporate development and operational positions at ChannelPoint and Hewlett-Packard. Matt holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Stanford University, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley.

David Hodgson, Chief Information Officer
David has a two decade track record of leadership in computational sciences. He has delivered enterprise class solutions and leading edge innovations at the junction between the Life Sciences and Information Technology. He joined Tethys from Roche where he was the Global Head of Scientific Information Systems for Research and Exploratory Development. He was formerly Worldwide Head of Biology Informatics at Pfizer Global R&D. David is a member of the Silicon Valley CIO Roundtable, has been an advisor to a number of Bay Area startups and an ad hoc member of the PRIME forum of R&D Informatics leaders across the Biopharma industry. He is a prior member of the Drug Discovery Today editorial board, and consultant to a number of university graduate programs. He has held senior positions at Incyte Genomics and The Sanger Institute during the pioneering years of the Human Genome Project.
